But in practice, it means that repeated breakdowns are built into the design.

reliability Why the $400 KitchenAid Mixer You Just Bought Is Already Half-Dead

Cites durability (against), maintenance (against), noise (against)

For home bakers, this engineered weak point turns a $400 mixer into a recurring project, not a set-it-and-forget-it tool.
The result is a cycle: bake, break, disassemble, repeat.
Symptoms show up as grinding noises, sluggish performance, or even visible oil leaking from the mixer seams.

AUCMA stand mixer

It did a good job whipping the cream, but it was extremely loud and had a higher pitched sound that was much more annoying than the others.

Cites noise (against)

It was the loudest mixer at both medium and high speeds in my testing.
It also splashed more. During this test, small specks of cream flew up and landed on the camera and on top of the mixer.
With the cookies, the flat beater didn't reach the sides of the bowl very well.
A large chunk of butter got stuck inside the beater.
And after I added the eggs, the liquid pulled in the center while the thicker mixture stayed around the sides. I had to stop and scrape the bowl several times to get everything mixed well.
The final pizza dough and pizza came out fine, but the mixer shook throughout the test.
It threw more flour out of the bowl than the others, and the high-pitched noise it made was super annoying.
They both shake too much and require a lot of scraping.
The AUCMA is extremely loud and the Hamilton Beach dough hook couldn't grab the pizza dough without me manually threading it on.

With the whipped cream, it took over 4 minutes to reach stiff peaks, more than twice as long as the KitchenAid mixers.

The whisk only reaches a small area near the center of the bowl, so it doesn't handle small amounts very well.
With the cookies, there was still large chunks of brown sugar after several minutes of mixing.
The mixer head also shook and bounced much more than the others.
The final dough came out fine, but I had to scrape the bowl several times.
With the pizza dough, it shook a ton and the dough hook was too rounded to grab the dough properly.

Cuisinart stand mixer

It did a great job with the whipped cream, but the cookies were disappointing.

The flat beater didn't reach the sides of the bowl very well, so a lot of the butter and sugar stayed stuck along the walls.
I had to stop and scrape the bowl several times, and there were still some large chunks of brown sugar that I had to break up with the spatula.
My main complaint is the flat beater. it doesn't get close enough to the sides of the bowl.

Cuisinart is the closest of the cheaper mixers to KitchenAid in both price and performance.

It's also much heavier and feels much more stable than the other two cheaper mixers.
The bowl and all three attachments are dishwasher safe, unlike the whisks included with the KitchenAid Classic and Artisan, which need to be handwashed.
It was also the quietest mixer at low, medium, and high speeds.
It did a great job with the whipped cream, but the cookies were disappointing.
The final cookie dough came out fine, but I wish the beater got closer to the walls of the bowl.
It did much better with the pizza dough. Unlike the Hamilton Beach, the dough hook grabbed the dough properly, the mixer was stable, and the head remained securely locked throughout the test.
The final dough and pizza came out great.
Cuisinart did a great job with the whipped cream and pizza dough, and it was actually more stable than the KitchenAid Classic and Artisan during kneading.
The head locks in both the raised and lowered positions, and the bowl is larger than the KitchenAid Classic's, and it has a handle, and all of the attachments are dishwasher safe.

KitchenAid vintage Hobart-built mixer

The original 1919 mixer weighed in at more than 25 lb, a solid mass of cast iron and steel that set it apart from anything else on the market.

Every critical part, from the gear train to the outer housing, was engineered from metal, echoing the standards found in commercial bakeries and naval galleys.
Inside, the gear train was a study in over-engineering. Steel-on-steel contact, precision-machined tolerances, and a drive system modeled after industrial equipment.
These mixers were so robust that stories circulated of them surviving decades in bakery basements or riding out storms at sea on Navy ships.
The sheer weight alone, over 25 lb, spoke to the density of materials and the absence of cost-cutting.
still mixes weekly after three decades with only a fresh cord and a dab of grease.
Vintage owners share receipts from the 1980s and the 1990s, some machines logging 40 years of use without a major breakdown.
Modern mixers cycle through repairs, while their all-metal ancestors quietly outlast them.
For serious bakers, the legacy of Hobart built longevity lives on in vintage machines and select commercial alternatives.

What do people say about stand mixers in general?

Claims about stand mixers that name no single product — technique, materials, what to look for. Still evidence, and often the claims that decide a purchase.

it does so many things. It's not just a dough mixer. I mean, there's like a billion attachments to this thing where you can make pasta. There's an ice cream churner. There's a meat grinder. I mean, this is like a billion tools in one.
