it doesn't really scrape the real Frozen pieces off the edge now that's key for making really good ice cream it still does a good enough job but you might need to add some sort of additive to your ice cream to make it that really good kind of chewy thick ice cream consistency

But in practice, it means that repeated breakdowns are built into the design.

Cites durability (against), maintenance (against), noise (against)

For home bakers, this engineered weak point turns a $400 mixer into a recurring project, not a set-it-and-forget-it tool.
The result is a cycle: bake, break, disassemble, repeat.
Symptoms show up as grinding noises, sluggish performance, or even visible oil leaking from the mixer seams.

Inside every modern KitchenAid Artisan mixer there's a single part that quietly determines the lifespan of the whole machine, the nylon worm gear.

durability Why the $400 KitchenAid Mixer You Just Bought Is Already Half-Dead

Cites noise (against), build quality (against), durability (against), maintenance (against)

The original grease is petroleum-based, chosen for its low cost and basic compatibility with metal and plastic parts. Over time, especially during repeated heavy mixing, this grease starts to break down.
Heat from the motor and friction inside the gear case causes the oil to separate and seep out, leaving behind a sticky residue and dry spots on critical gear teeth. Once the lubricant thins or migrates, metal parts lose their protective buffer.
Service records and technician interviews point to a pattern. Mixers that have their original grease replaced with a modern synthetic alternative run cooler, leak less, and show less internal wear after years of use. For owners willing to open the case and swap out the petroleum grease, the improvement is immediate.…
The so-called lifetime claim in practice often means the lifetime of the first round of heavy baking, not the decades-long service many expect.
One logbook shows a KitchenAid Artisan returned for its second worm gear replacement in under 5 years.
Modern mixers cycle through repairs, while their all-metal ancestors quietly outlast them.

One thing I noticed during my testing is that the head on all three KitchenAid mixers doesn't lock in the raised position. This could catch you off guard, create a mess, or potentially pinch your fingers.

The paddle hit the dough hook and sent it flying out of the bowl. It almost hit me in the face and it left white marks from the dough hook's coating inside the bowl.
you can use it for mixing anything Doe's cookies batters Etc right you're whipping egg whites you're making marshmallow fluff whatever the Whisk attachment will do it you have all the other hands for DS and batters but the biggest reason why it's so useful is this thing right here this little hole this machine has so…

When you upgrade from the Artisan to the Artisan Plus, you get a double flex edge beater, plus heavier stainless steel versions of the same beater, whisk, and dough hook. All four attachments are dishwasher safe.

The Artisan Plus was noticeably better because the double flex edge beater continuously scraped the sides of the bowl. I only had to stop once after adding the dry ingredients and very little dough collected in the middle of the beater.
The Artisan Plus was much more stable, and the locking lever stayed in place throughout the test.

All three whipped the cream in about two minutes without any issues.

All three also handled the pizza dough well and produced excellent pizza, but the heads of the Classic and Artisan bounced a lot more during kneading, and their locking levers shifted away from the fully locked position, which caused them to bounce even more.

Hamilton Beach and Cuisinart do the same thing, but the AUCMA and KitchenAid Artisan Plus won't start until you return the control to zero. That's a pretty big safety issue, especially if you store the whisk, beater, and dough hook inside the bowl like I do.

The bowl and all three attachments are dishwasher safe, unlike the whisks included with the KitchenAid Classic and Artisan, which need to be handwashed.

KitchenAid vintage Hobart-built mixer

0:30 supports The Hungry Past
The original 1919 mixer weighed in at more than 25 lb, a solid mass of cast iron and steel that set it apart from anything else on the market.

durability relaying someone else Why the $400 KitchenAid Mixer You Just Bought Is Already Half-Dead

Cites build quality, durability, reputation, weight

Every critical part, from the gear train to the outer housing, was engineered from metal, echoing the standards found in commercial bakeries and naval galleys.
Inside, the gear train was a study in over-engineering. Steel-on-steel contact, precision-machined tolerances, and a drive system modeled after industrial equipment.
These mixers were so robust that stories circulated of them surviving decades in bakery basements or riding out storms at sea on Navy ships.
The sheer weight alone, over 25 lb, spoke to the density of materials and the absence of cost-cutting.
still mixes weekly after three decades with only a fresh cord and a dab of grease.
Vintage owners share receipts from the 1980s and the 1990s, some machines logging 40 years of use without a major breakdown.
Modern mixers cycle through repairs, while their all-metal ancestors quietly outlast them.
For serious bakers, the legacy of Hobart built longevity lives on in vintage machines and select commercial alternatives.
