Does the HexClad Hybrid scratch? What 5 people say

John and Christopher Scott each owned HexClad pans for 18 months: one says they look new, the other calls that too short a life.

About HexClad Hybrid.

We have not used any of these ourselves. We read 5 sources and structured what 5 people said. Of the 20 quotes below, 11 are complaints and 8 come from someone with a declared commercial interest. Every one of them links to the person who said it and the second they said it.

Based on 5 people, 5 sources and 43 recorded claims. A declared interest is labelled beside the quote rather than removed.

The answer

Yes, the HexClad Hybrid's coating can wear through. Christopher Scott, who stopped using his set, says it scraped off the 8-inch pan he kept for eggs, and David Gafford, co-host of The Barbecue Lab, who was sent his pans by HexClad, found two small chips after 18 months of metal utensils. PissedConsumer, host of the PissedConsumer channel, sees only light scratches after more than 12 months. These 5 sources cannot say what the coating looks like past 23 months.

and in fact the 8 in pan that I always use to cook my eggs in you can see here hopefully um it's missing this is where it's the non-stick coating really started to scrape off and right there my eggs stick there all the time and it's very hard to kind of avoid that section when you're cooking cooking eggs in an 8 in…

and I kind of forgot about it until about the beginning of this past November November 2023 when I noticed that my 8 in and the 10-in and the 12-in and even the walk in some places and we barely ever used the walk was actually missing the non-stick Coating in some pretty big large areas and the walk we very seldom…
this Pan the 12in has definitely food sticks to this more than it does the 10-in and I probably use the 10-in more
I once thought that this was a really great purchase so I kind of feel let down even though they did Supply new ones with their warranty uh but I don't want to have to go through the hassle of having to get new pots and pans every 18 months for a a pot and pan that they claim should last well they say cooking lifetime…

but for me I don't want to have to replace my pots and pans every 18 to 20 months because the non-stick coating is wearing off on them so I won't be using these anymore I'm going to be switching to like a stainless steel all clad type of pot and pan and I'm not really sure what brand to buy yet

but I have been able to chip off the nonstick coating in two very small places. I had to look pretty hard to find these, but it looks like my heavy metal utensil usage found a way past the stainless.

David Gafford was given the product. Stated in the source: “HexClad sent us these pans over a year and a half ago for us to test and see if we like them.”

The visible flaking of the PTFE coating on this pan is really found on the top rim. During daily use, I hadn't noticed this until inspecting closely for this video, but in quite a few places, the top row of nonstick is missing. It blends in with the stainless top rim, and I'm guessing that's why I didn't notice it…
Will they eventually fail and need replaced under warranty? In my experience, I think so.
HexClad says that these pans are dishwasher safe, and let's be honest, that's what we all really want to hear, right? After working a full day, coming home to fix dinner, and then not having a butler or maid to do the dishes is the worst. I know we throw our pans in the dishwasher a few times a week, and I'm going to…

HexClad sent us these pans over a year and a half ago for us to test and see if we like them. This isn't a sponsored video. HexClad hasn't told us what to say or even asked for a video. What follows is our honest experience using HexClad as our primary pans for the last year and a half.

Where do people disagree about HexClad Hybrid?

  • PissedConsumer reports "a few light scratches" after more than 12 months, and John, speaking on John Reviews Everything too, says his pans still look new. Christopher Scott counters that the coating on his egg pan "really started to scrape off", and David Gafford chipped it in two small places with heavy metal utensils.
  • PissedConsumer questions paying for a pan sold as non-stick that still needs oil, and Prudent Reviews, a reviewer who tests pans head-to-head and was given its HexClad pans, finds the surface less slippery than non-stick. Christopher Scott answers that with butter or avocado oil his eggs never stuck.
  • Christopher Scott says 18 months is not long enough for cookware at this price, and switched to stainless. David Gafford thinks the pans will outlast a standard non-stick pan.
  • Prudent Reviews reads the fine print of the warranty as covering only manufacturer defects, and David Gafford would not expect a pan never to need a claim. Christopher Scott says HexClad did honour its lifetime warranty for him.

Do they cost more than a Farberware pan from Walmart? Yes. Will they outlast a standard nonstick pan? Also, I think yes.

But if you look at the fine print, it seems as though the warranty only covers manufacturer defects. In other words, if the pan arrives damaged, you can get a new one for free.

HexClad describes their warranty as a performance warranty, which when translated means if there's a problem that affects the performance of your pot or pan, it's covered according to HexClad. Maybe they've already baked that into the cost we're paying up front, and that's expected, but I wouldn't purchase a HexClad…

How will HexClad Hybrid hold up over time?

Christopher Scott bought a HexClad set in February 2022 and gave it up about 23 months later, after the coating wore through on the 8-inch pan he kept for eggs. Christopher Scott does not want to replace pans every 18 to 20 months.

John has had his set for the same 18 months and says it has held up well and still looks new. David Gafford has cooked on HexClad as the family's main pans for a year and a half, on pans HexClad sent, and found two small chips from metal utensils and a residue on the sidewall that no longer washes off.

PissedConsumer has had one for more than 12 months and sees only light scratches, while also saying the pan looks good partly because it was barely used.

the telltale sign that it's been used a bunch is the dingy residue that's on the top of the pan sidewall. I have a hard time getting this stuff off, and eventually, it just becomes stuck on, and I don't worry about it. It looks great, and you'd think that's a sign of quality, but not exactly. Over the past year, I've had plenty of questions about who this pan is really for. And the truth is, it looks this good because I barely used it.

And yes, now Hexflat changed the coating. But the older pans were PTFE coated like ours, which is part of what sparked a class action lawsuit. Enough owners reported flaking, scratches, and rust to push for a $2.5 million settlement.
That's the same area many reviewers say ends up damaged over time.
They also mentioned coating can flake into food, chip after light use, scratch deeply, often on pans purchased from Costco.

What the evidence suggests

  • Choose the HexClad Hybrid if you cook with metal utensils and can live with small chips: David Gafford, who was sent his pans by HexClad, used heavy metal utensils on them for 18 months and found two small chipped spots.
  • Choose the HexClad Hybrid if you always cook eggs in butter or oil: Christopher Scott says fat stopped his eggs sticking, and PissedConsumer found an egg cooked without oil still left a patch behind.
  • Choose something other than HexClad if you expect a non-stick surface to last well past 18 to 20 months: Christopher Scott gave up his set after about 23 months as the coating wore off, and moved to stainless steel.

Eggs without oil, pretty much the same as a year ago. A small patch stuck to the surface. The rest of the egg came off fine, but that little spot left behind tiny bits I had to scrape away.

I'll be honest, I never cook this on a hex plad. And here's why. The omelette sticks and scorches right here in the center of the pan.
So, in this round, hexclad doesn't quite match the performance of a good non-stick pan.
But I kept checking because I was worried it might creep toward 500°, the point where Teflon can start breaking down.
In our test, the edges of the pan stayed cooler, about 320 to 355°, making the oil splash and bake around the rims.

What the evidence doesn’t tell us

Prudent Reviews holds 15 of the 43 claims about the HexClad Hybrid, 35% of what these 5 sources say, and all 15 come from pans HexClad gave it. David Gafford's pans were also sent by HexClad. The longest ownership anyone states is Christopher Scott's 23 months, and no one among the 5 people quoted says what the coating looks like in a third year. PissedConsumer's light scratches come with the admission that the pan was barely used, so they say little about daily cooking.
